Events Leading to the Civil War

  • Missouri Crisis

    This crisis began when the people of Missouri wanted statehood in 1817. The problem with allowing statehood was the decision of if slavery should be allowed or not. This debate over slavery is what made this crisis create more tension between the north and the south.
  • Compromise of 1820

    Compromise of 1820
    The Compromise of 1820 was to resolve the imbalance in Congress that resulted from Missouri being added as a salve state. The admission of Maine as a free state offset Missouri. This event increased tensions because of the allowance of one state to have slavery and one to not.

  • Nat Turner's Slave Revolt

    Nat Turner's Slave Revolt
    Occurring in 1831, this was the largest and most important slave uprising where a slaver preacher and his followers managed to kills around sixty white persons in Southhampton County, Virginia. This event increased the tension between the north and the south because laws were then later passed in the south which prohibited the education of slaves and free black people.

  • Texas Annexation of 1844

    Texas Annexation of 1844
    The Texas Annexation was a bill that was passed by President Tyler allowing Texas to be the 28th admitted to the Union. This annexation increased the tension because of the amount of slave holders within the state being let into the Union.

  • The Wilmot Provisio

    The Wilmot Provisio
    The Wilmot Provisio was designed to eliminate slavery in the land that was acquired by the Mexican War. This decreased the tension between the north and the south because it's work of eliminating slavery.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850 admitted California as a free state and had a stronger fugitive slave law and delayed the reasoning of the slave status in the New Mexico and Utah territories. This compromise increased the tension between the north and the south because of the determination of free and slave holding states.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    The fugitive slaw law laid out the procedures of returning a run away slave back to their territory or state from which they escaped. These laws decreased the tension because they found a middle ground on how to deal with fugitive slaves.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book published in 1852 that exposed the horrors of slavery and popularized the abolitionist position. The publishing of this book increased the tension between the North and South because it highly influenced the public opinion on the ideas of slavery.

  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854 allowed the settlers of the new territories north of the Missouri border to decide the issue of slavery for themselves. This act increased the tension between the North and the South because it led to violence in Kansas and also resulted in the making of the Republican Party; making the people more divided.
  • Formation of the Republican Party

    The republican party was formed in 1854 and opposed the spread of slavery into the western territories. It was also formed to go against the tyranny of Andrew Jackson. The forming of this party increased the tension because of the number of people choosing sides against slavery.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas was violence between pro- and antislavery settlers within the Kansas Territory in 1856. This increased tension between the north and the south because it brought up many differing opinions about the different types of settlers.
  • Dred Scott Court Decision

    The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that Dred Scott, a former slave that relocated to slavery free state was not entitled to his freedom because of the idea that African Americans could not be citizens of the United States. This decision increased tension between the north and the south because of the unfair ruling of not giving this slave his freedom even though the Missouri Compromise granted it to him.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    The Lincoln Douglas Debates was a series of debates that were focused on the issue of slavery within the territories. This debate was between Republican Abraham Lincoln and Democratic Senator Stephen A. Douglas. This increased the tension between the north and the south because of the disagreement between the different political parties.
  • John Brown's Raid on Henry;s Ferry

    This was a raid by an abolitionist John Brown to initiate an armed slae revolt by taking over a United States Aresenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. This revolt increased the tension between the north and the south because of the amount of supervision of slaves should be given.
  • Election of 1860

    The Election of 1860 elected Republican Abraham Lincoln to be the 16th president. This increased the tension between the north and the south because it strenthented the voting parties based on opinions of slavery.
  • Underground Railroad

    Underground Railroad
    The Underground Rail was a system of routes and safe houses that runaway slaves could stay at while on their journey to the North to escape freedom. This increased tension because of all the escaping made people at edge about their slaves along with catching the runaway ones.
