    For Congress to preserve its balance in power between the free slave states and the slaves states. This Compromise admitted Missouri a slave state and Maine a slave free state.

    A way and effort to end slavery, to help the slaves get their freedom; also known as the Abolitionist Movement

    A network of many secret passages and routes that was established in the United States; It was widely known as a way for the African Americans to escape.

    It had 5 laws that were passed that had dealt with the issue of slavery and the expansion of territory. Washington D.C.'s slavery was abolished and the Fugitive slave Act was amended.

    This act had required that slaves must go back to their owners even if they were in a free state. The government had the power to find, return, and trying the escaped slaves.

    A book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe to show how the life of a slave was like, it started to bring up a little "war" between the North and the South. It showed how poorly and terrible the slaves were being treated and how there needed to be a stop.

    The territories of Kansas and Nebraska, it was allowing states to vote and decide whether or not slavery should be allowed or not. This act had canceled out the Missouri Compromise.

    John Brown had lead a small group, about 22 men including himself into Harper's Ferry and attempted to to start an armed revolt to destroy the institution of slavery.

    It showed the divisions within the United States, it had four strong candidates that were competing for presidency. It was the first and only time the Constitutional Union Party ran as a candidate for President. Abraham Lincoln won the Presidency.

    A war that was between the federal union and the Southern states that were upset that Lincoln had won the Presidency. The southern states had started to secede.
