Events leading to the Civil War

  • Period: to

    States' Rights'

The South believed that each state should be able to have certain rights, such as allowing slaves. The North was not so keen on this idea. But what the South thought the North was going to do was abolish slavery, and in turn annihilate the Southern economy.
  • Period: to

    Slavery

Slavery played a key role in triggering the Civil War. The southern economy was entirely depended on slavery, as slaves were used on farms, and farms were the main industry in the South. The North was against the idea of slavery. They did not support the use of human beings for work with no pay.
  • Missouri Compromise

It allowed Missouri to enter as a slave state and Maine to enter as a free state. This compromise was made in order to balance the number of slave states and free states. It also created a slave line at the 36, 30 latitude line. Anything below the line was slave, and anything above, other than Missouri, was free.
  • Nullification Crisis

During this event, the South Carolina government said that they would not allow the tariffs because they did not follow the ideas set forth by the constitution. They dared to secede from the States if their ideas were not respected.
  • Compromise of 1850

It let California become a free state. It also created a better Fugitive Slave Law than the last and gave people living in Utah and New Mexico a choice to be a free state or a slave state.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

It created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. The reason behind the act was to create many farms for settlers that wanted farms at a little to no cost. They were called homesteads.
  • Period: to

    Dred Scott Case

Dread Scott was a slave and his master, Dr. Emerson, took him to a state where slavery was not allowed. This caused Dred to sue Emerson. Eventually, since the case reached the Supreme Court, they decided that since Dred was considered property, his master could take him wherever he wished.
  • Election of 1860

In this election, Abraham Lincoln was up against a northern Democratic representative, a southern Democratic representative, and a Constitutional Union representative. Lincoln tried hard to please as many voters across the North and the South as possible, though Abraham was not included on the ballots in the South. Lincoln went on to win this historical election.
  • Connections

All of the Compromises were attempts to make the grudge between the North and the South smaller. Abraham Lincoln was elected because he campaigned that he would be against the spread of slavery. The Election of 1860 caused South Carolina to secede because they thought that they wouldn't have to follow the law if they were not a part of this country. The Dred Scott decision could have turned out differently if not for the Supreme Court's view on slavery. They thought slaves = property.
