  • Cotton Gin

    Cotton Gin
    The Cotton Gin invented in 1793 by Eli Whitney made the product of cotton more profitable, increasing a demand for slavery in the South.
  • Missouri Compromise of 1820

    Missouri Compromise of 1820
    It admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. And North of 36 30' would be free. This compromise disrupted the balance in the Senate between the North and the South, leading to the Civil war.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    Brought by congressman David Wilmot a Free-soil party member that said that land aquired in the Mexican War would have no slaves. This bill put in danger the ranks of the Whigs and Democrats and split national politics in the North and South creating Civil War.

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    A treaty brougth by Nicholas P. Trit that ended the Mexican War. U.S aquired Texas, California, Nevada, New mexico and Arizona.This new land rised the slavery debate as the South wanted to allow slavery and the North wanted to stop it. The Union had to decide if slavery should continue or not. As a result, this confict helped contribute to the Civil War.

    This act was part of the Compromise of 1850 that said that runaway slaves should be returned to their owners even if they're in a free state. North didn't like being forced to hunt runaway slaves. South was mad because more abolitionist were growing and Northerners refuse to follow the law. The North and South to drifted away even more because of diffrent point of views of slavery causing Civil War.

    "Uncle Tom's Cabin"
    A novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe was determined to awaken the North. Boys in Blue volunteered to fight the Civil War. They were determined to end slavery. It was also hated in the South and it was responed by many speeches that said it was divine blessing that introduced Africans to White civilization. Lincoln "So you're the little woman who wrote that book that made this great war."
  • Kanasas-Nebraska Act

    Kanasas-Nebraska Act
    Brought by Senator Stephen Douglass of Illinois. It repealed the Missouri Compromise, allowing slavery North of 36 30' and Nebraska would become a Slave State. North was infurated because they tought it was an act of "bad faith". Future compromises later on would be difficult and without compromises it would cause the Civil War.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    In the case Dred Scott v. Sandford, Dred sued for his freedom because he was brought to Illinois & Wisconsin.This decision was an opening to the Civil War. Supreme Court said that slaves were not citizens and could not sue in courts. Republicans said that the ruling of the court was just an opinion. Southerns began to think how can they stay in a union that refuse to honor the Supreme Court?

    Abolitionist John Brown started a slave revolt on Harper's Ferry, Virginia against slavery. His revolt was capture by Robert E. Lee. Brown received financial and moral assistenece from the North. While the South thought he was a murder. South though that violent abolitionist view was shared by the whole North sparking Civil War.

    Election of 1860
    Abraham Lincoln, John C. Breckinridge, John Bell and Stephen Douglas running in the Presidential Election of 1860. The Nation and Political Parties were divided into the Republicans, Democrats and the Constitutional Union Party. The main disagreements were over slavery and its expansion. In that same year South Carolina seceded from the union causing Civil War.
