Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act infuriated Northerners.
1. Fugitive slaves must be returned to their masters.
2. anyone helping slaves could be given 6 months in prison.
3. The North saw this as a way for the South to expand the power of slavery. -

2. Many joined the abolitionist movement after learning the harsh realities of life as a slave. -
Kansas Nebraska Act

1. The Act allowed each territory to decide the issue of slavery on the basis of popular sovereignty. -
Dred Scott Decision
Slave sues for his freedom after living in a free state.
1. Supreme Court ruled that Dred Scott was property and not a citizen and had no right to sue.
2. Ruling decied that the Missouri Compromise stopping slavery in the Northern territories was unconstitutional. -
Harper’s Ferry
Attack on Harper’s ferry by Abolitionist John Brown.
1. Goal is to gain control of weapons and lead a slave revolt
2. The goal failed which led to the hanging of Brown for treason.
