    Battle of Lexington & Concord
    These battles occurred between the red coats and the minutemen.A shot was randomly fired from either side.This shot was know as "the shot heard around the world." No one is sure who fired the shot first.This marked the war for American independence.These battles were important because they established the start of the war against Britain.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Battle of Saratoga
    This battle was the turning point of the American Revolution.The U.S also gained a allie. The french took the side of the the U.S.This would be after the victory of the Battle of Saratoga,The french were persuaded by their efforts.The British would soon fall back.This battle was import because it got the french on our side.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Battle of Yorktown
    The final battle of the American Revolutionary War.This was a victory for the patriots the British lost the battle.The British were forced surrender.This was the last major battle.Afterwards the Treaty of Paris was signed.This battle was important because it marked the end of the war.
  • Northwest Ordinance

    Northwest Ordinance
    The Northwest Ordinance was a territory of land that was used for different purposes.One of these purposes included selling land to the people for their own use.While the other was for expansion of the U.S.There were many new states omitted to the U.S as well.Slavery was also outlawed in this territory.It was important because it was a an area that did not allow slavery.This increased sectionalism in a way.

    Alien & Sedition Acts
    A set of laws passed to limit foreigners and what they could do.This included the freedom of press and speech.The Alien & Sedition acts upset the southerners they were not in favor of them.The Alien act said someone who comes to the U.S would have to wait 14 years to become a citizen.While the Sedition act said no one could print or write anything criticizing the government.These acts were important because it violated the rights of people and people could be deported.

  • Virginia & Kentucky Resolutions

    Virginia & Kentucky Resolutions
    These were resolutions created by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. They were in protest against the Alien & Sedition acts developed by the federalist.They felt that the Alien & Sedition acts were unconstitutional.Also they enabled the states the ability to nullify a law.The Alien & Sedition acts were nullified by this.It was important because it further developed the idea of states rights.
  • Marbury v.Madison

    Marbury v.Madison
    This court ruling was all due to the appointment of midnight judges.This case created the power or ability for the Judicial branch to use Judicial Review. This allowed the Judicial branch to review laws and determine if they are constitutional.As a result more power was given to the courts.Not only was more power given to the courts but also the Federal government. It was important because power was given to the Federal government and this is another thing that was trying to be achieved.

    Louisiana Purchase
    This was a purchase between the United States and France over territory that France previously owned.There was a total of 15 states added to the United States.Not only did this give us access to the Mississippi River but it allowed Lewis and Clark to further their expedition.This event was important because it helped developed part of the nation that we currently know as the United States.The Mississippi River was used for many purposes including economic reasons.This was very important as well.

    The Missouri Compromise was put into place to balance things out.It attempted to balance out slave and free states.Maine was added as a free state while Missouri was added as a slave state.Not only did it add a free and slave state it also established something else.It created the 36 30 line.It was important because it was a attempt to settle things down over the argument of free and slave states.

    The Monroe Doctrine was a policy developed by president Monroe.It stated that no European country had no rights to be anywhere in the Western hemisphere.There was fear that Spain would attempt to reclaim colonies.Overall the Monroe Doctrine was not necessarily used at the time.However,it would be used in future references.It was important because it established a policy that could prevent Europeans from trying anything.

    The Nullification Crisis was a ordinance created by South Carolina.This occurred during the presidency of Andrew Jackson. South Carolina was trying to nullify tariffs.They felt the tariffs were unconstitutional.Also they did not want to pay taxes on goods that they did not produce.The nullification crisis was important because it just boosted to problems that could lead up to the Civil War.

    At a certain point Texas was by itself but it was annexed into the U.S. For awhile Texas was not allowed to be a state because of one major factor.This factor was the balancing of slave and free states.James K. Polk was a part of the reason why Texas was Annexed.He was in fact a supporter of slave states so this justifies another reason why Texas was added.The annexation of Texas was important because it lead to more land for the U.S.

    The Oregon Treaty was a Treaty between Britain and the United States.This treaty brought a end to the boundary dispute.While establishing the 49th parallel as well.This document was signed in in D.C. Britain and the U.S both claimed this territory for their own purposes.It was important because it gave the U.S ownership of the Oregon territory.

    Mexican Cession (Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo)
    The Mexican Cession was a result of the Mexican American War.The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo signed over the northern part of mexico to the U.S.The U.S had officially expanded from coast to coast.Manifest Destiny is the proper term for the expansion.We gained 7 states which were California,Colorado,Arizona,New Mexico,Nevada,Utah,and Wyoming.It was important because it gave us more states and it completed the goal of the Nation.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The first part of this was the admission of California as a state by Congress.Then as previously done when deciding if the state would be a free or slave state the people made the decision for New Mexico and Utah.Next up slavery sales in Washington,D.C would no longer take place.After this Texas gave up any part in New Mexico.Finally the Fugitive Slave Act was passed requiring any escaped slaves to be returned.It was important because it had things about that made the south happy and vice versa.

    A brief period of fighting in Kansas as people settled the territory.Since the Kansas-Nebraska Act came about it was up to the people to decide if it was a slave or free state.Many people from different backgrounds including pro and anti slavery people were there.So as you can imagine they did not get along.Both sides fought for control but things got out of hand.This occurrence was important because it was brought to the attention of people with authority that something needed to be done.

    Act passed by congress giving the people the right to decide if they wanted to have slavery with the Kansas and Nebraska territories.The Kansas-Nebraska Act prospered the idea of popular sovereignty.As a result to this the Missouri Compromise was not put into use as much anymore.Also the act was created to annul the Missouri Compromise.Which prohibit slavery above the 36 30 line or the Mason Dixon line.It was important because it brought about the conversation of slavery.

    This would be the battle to start the Civil War.The Battle of Fort Sumter was a Confederate victory.The main reason this battle happened was the secession of the south.Also this is why it was the first battle.It occurred in South Carolina at Charleston Harbor.It was important because without this battle the war could not have started.

    This battle would be the first major battle of the Civil War.The northern troops were untrained at the time.As a result the south's morals were heightened. Leading the north to realize that there had to be more effort put into defeating the south.Not only did they need more effort but they would also be dealing with the south for quite some time.This battle was important because it helped they north justify what they needed to do to be successful in the rest of the war.

    This battle occurred closely to Antietam creek and Sharpsburg,Maryland.The Battle of Antietam ended the invasion attempted by General Robert E. Lee on the north.The union achieved a victory in this battle.It was mainly the bloodiest or deadliest days of the war as a whole.It was important because as a result of this battle Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation.

    Emancipation Proclamation
    Issued by Abraham Lincoln this deceleration says that all people that were slaves shall be set free.This would greatly effect the country as it went into its third year of the Civil War. Lincoln was hoping that this would turn everything around.Not for the abolishing of slavery but for the preservation of the Union.Lincoln ended slavery with this for the sole purpose of the Union as a whole .The Emancipation Proclamation was important because it lead to a change in slavery.

    Battle of Vicksburg
    The battle of Vicksburg was fought in Vicksburg,Mississippi.The Union won this battle as well.Therefore this gave them control of the Mississippi River.General Ulysses S. Grant brought his army into Mississippi and successfully got the confederate forces to surrender.Due to this the Confederacy would eventually be split in half.This battle was important because the Union gained control of a important stronghold in the South.

    The speech that was delivered by Abraham Lincoln at the national cemetery.The speech addressed human equality and spoke about the Civil War.Lincoln stated that the soldiers died for a reason for the birth of a new freedom.Abraham Lincoln said that the Union must be preserved. Along with the idealistic qualities of its self government.It was important because it was one of the most important speeches in American history.

    A battle fought between the Confederate and the Union army.The confederate forces were lead by General Robert E.Lee.General Robert E.Lee attempted to invade the north but failed in his attempt.This was a victory for the Union.However,there was a numerous amount of causalities of both the Union and Confederate side.The Battle of Gettysburg was important because this was Lee's first tactical defeat.

    13th amendment passed
    This amendment was best known for abolishing slavery.African Americans were now free to do what they wanted.Though this was the case African Americans still were having troubles.After they were freed they did not do so well economically.Most of them had to become sharecroppers.This amendment was important because it had such a large impact on the South.They lost a majority of their way of being so elite in agriculture.

    This was the second reconstruction amendment. It was known for giving African Americans two things.Their birthright citizenship and equal protection were these two things.This amendment did not allow any states to deny anyone of the following.This included life,liberty,or property.It was important because African Americans were now considered citizens of america event though they weren't treated fairly.

    This amendment was the last Civil War amendment.It granted African American men the right to vote.There was a major importance of this event because African Americans were now given a right they never had.However another importance of the 15th amendment was the practices used to stop African Americans from voting.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)

    Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)
    Plessy v. Ferguson was a known case that created the term "separate but equal" because of the separate car act.Which dealt with the separation of train cars for African Americans and Whites.This case was important because this was one of the first times that segregation was considered legal.The court ruled this as fair as long as the African Americans were given the same things but separately.Another reason why it was important was it showed the conditions for the African Americans.
