    caravel invented

    During the 1400's the caravel was invented by Prince Henry of Portugal. It was a revolutionary build because with a caravel you could sail slightly into the wind. This was a huge feat because people could travel in the direction normal ships couldn't.

    Johannes Gutenburg invented the printing press in Mainz, Germany, 1454. He did this so books could be mass produced along with news papers ,and so people could here about events ,and what was happening with their government.

    Cabot left Dersey Head island in 1498.He headed toward the Americas ,from which he did not return, and may have been the first European explorer to explore the coast of Georgia.

    Columbus left port Sanlucar in Spain in 1498.He was looking for any land unknown south of the known islands ,the Indies.Columbus discovered an island and named it Trinidad after the great Trinity.Then he discovered South America, they were the first Europeans to see this new land.

    Sir Francis Drake left England in 1577.His mission was to circumnavigate the world to disrupt spains control of the Pacific and the Americas.Drake was the second captain to circle the world.

    Drake ruturned from his voyage around the world in 1580.When he returned he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth herself. Also he was made vice admiral of the English fleet. He died in 1596 in an expedition on the Carribean ocean.

    Raleigh left in 1585.He was going on an exploration trip to find sites for later colonies.They landed on Roanoke island and met the brother of the chieftain of the island. Raleigh went back to England with items to show for his journey. like skins ,pearl necklaces ,and two indians, Manteo and Wanchese who they used to help raise support for Raleighs third trip to the Americas.
