Portuguese Colonization
The first sign of land the capints saw was a mountain on what they thought was an island. They named the mountain Monte Pascoal. The island they named Ilha de Vera Cruz which means island of the true cross. -

First French exproation of "New World"
The French sent Jacques Cartier to the new world to explore. When he got here he was told to claim it for franch. He later tryed to start a colonie but due to weather, disease, and conflict with other European powers. -
British
Fist colonization of the British began in Jamestown, Virginia. They would eventually spread north to modern day Maine, and south to Georgia. -
Swedish
The Swedish founded the colony of New Sweden located on the Delaware River in 1638. They also founded other colonies on the Delaware in present day Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. -

Russian explorers traveling East from Siberia discovered Alaska and claimed it as their territory. -

The Australians first dicovered america in 1788. They were sailing and ported in present day New South Wales, Canada. -
