  • Dutch Explorer, Abel Tasman

    Abel Tasman was a Dutch explorer, he was best known for his voyages in 1642 and 1644.Tasman was the first European explorer to make it to what is now known as Tasmania and New Zealand.In 1642 he was sent by the the governor- general of the Dutch East Indies to explore and map out New Holland. On November 24th 1642 he came across the island of Tasmania. Tasman claimed the island for Holland by leaving a Dutch flag.He mapped out the coast then continued east crossing what is now the Tasman Sea.

When he returned home the governor wasn't happy since they didn't find gold. In 1644 he was sent on another voyage. This time he was to see if New Guinea connected to the south land. He was supposed to sail down its east coast, but at Torres Strait he couldn't get through the reefs. He went west and came up on the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Tasman's voyagws were the last major efforts made by the Dutch to map New Holland. By the end of the 1600's no other voyages were made.
