A Man in a Red Turban

A Man in a Red Turban
In fifteenth century Flanders, Van Eyck painted "A Man in a Red Turban." There were two aspects that made this artwork special: it was a secular portrait without any religious overtones and the eyes of the man follow the eyes of the viewer at whatever angle. Van Eyck paints it so the man looks directly at the viewer which had not been done for probably a thousand years in the Western world. Another interesting part of the painting is people speculate that the painting could be a self-portrait.
