    Muslim and Italian Merchants Control Trade

    Since the Muslims controlled trade in the area of present day Middle East, if merchants passed through that area as a shortcut it would be worst then going around Africa due to high taxes. Instead what they did is travel along Africas coastline saving money with the expense of more time on the voyage heading towards the Indies .

    Prince Henry The Navigator

    rince Henry the Navigator was a Portuguese prince, soldier, and patron of explorers. Henry sent many sailing expeditions down Africa's west coast, but did not go on them himself. Thanks to Prince Henry's patronage, Portuguese ships sailed to the Madeira Islands and many more places.

    Chinese MIng Dynasty

    During this dynasty after Zheng He died the Chinese stopped funding for explorations. They also changed there trading strategies by stopping trade with Europe.

    Christopher Columbus

    Italian sailor who sailed for Spain. It was thought that he discovered America but instead the turth was that he actually discovered a couple of Carribean Islands including the Bahamas.

    During this period the Pope divided present day South America into 2 sections one side. They were divided for Spain and Portugal.

    Vasco de Gama

    He was a Portuguese sailor, the first person to sail directly from Europe to India. He discovered an ocean route around Africa which saved the Europeans money because if they took the route through the middle east on there way to the Indies they would've been charged with heavy taxes/fees.

    Pedro Alvarez Cabral

    Pedro Cabral was a Portuguese navigator/explorer. He discovered Brazil which was a great achievement. After that he was sent to lead an expedition to India following the route Vasca de Gama had found around the African coast.

    Vasco de Gama

    In this year de Gama settled out from Portugal fo impose a moonopoly on spice trade. He went to Mozambique and Sofala. There, he got gold; established trading rights, and forced the new Sultan of Mozambique to give the King of Portugal an annual reward of gold.

    Alfonso de Albuquerque

    Alfonso de Albuquerque was a Portuguese general who was said to be a great conqueror/ empire builder. ONe of his achievements was being the first European to enter the Persian Gulf.

    Ferdinand Magellan

    While in the service of Spain, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan led the first European voyage of discovery to go around the whole globe. This was a very important event because it now proved that the Earth was round not flat.

    Spain and The Phillipines

    During this time period Spain took over the Philipines. Throughout this period they also spread Catholiscm. Also, they established a trading empire.

    Magellan's Exploration

    This day is when Magellan's voyage that shocked the world began. This is one again one of the most impactful events that took place in order to show that the Earth is indeed round.

    Portugal and Japan

    Around this time period this is where the relationship between Portugal and Japan began to sprout. In this year, the Portuguese landed in southern Japan. Eventually the place they landed in (port of Nagasaki) would become a hot spot for trading.
  • The Happy Return

    Dutch ships returned home to The Netherlands bringing a great surprise. That surprise was spices and wealth.
  • The Dutch East India

    This was the company that controled trade. During the 16th century the spice trade was growing throughout Europe but it was mostly dominated by the Portuguese. However, by the late 1500s the Portuguese began to have trouble supplying enough spices to meet demand and prices rose.
  • Japanese ban Western Merchants

    After hearing about Spain taking over The Phillipines the Japanese became suspicious of Europe. As a cause and effect scenerio Japan banned Western Merchants thinking they might be on to something.
