Ethics in Psychology

    Tuskeegee Syphilis Study

Sharecrops were studied, and they were injected with syphilis and were not allowed to take any kind of medication to treat it, they were also not told about it. I chose this because it shows how we can be very cruel with people who are not like us. A whole population was infected and thousands died for a "study"
  • Operant Conditioning- B.F.Skinner and Stanley Milgram

Skinner used electrical shocks on humans and then Milgram did it on humans. This was done to see if they would obey what was told of them. I chose this because when it was happening to animals no-one saw a problem with that but when it was done to humans people wanted to have a say so.
  • Tearoom Trade Study

Humphreys pretend to be a member of a homosexual community to observe activities. He wrote a book shattering stereotypical of what others thought. I chose this because he it was unethical of him to go in and spy on them like that.
  • Zimbardo Prison Experiment

A team of researchers lead by Zimbardo, created a prison under the school and students were either give the role of prisoner or guard. They were treated like actual prisoners, the study was to show that even people who are okay will struggle when put in situations like that. I chose this because it showed that even people who have done no crime can become different people in different environments.
