Blackboards began entering classrooms in the early 1800s.Multiple sources give credit to a few different people, but the most common person is James Pillans, a geography teacher and headmaster of a high school in Scotland.
James Pillans Invention -
In the 18th century (1701-1800s), students used these mini slates. They continued to use them after the blackboard invention as the blackboard was not at a reasonable price for classrooms to purchase.
Mini Slates -
The whiteboards began replacing blackboards in the mid-1950s.
Whiteboard -
Blackboards began being made out of using porcelain enamel and a durable base, typically steel. The material and high heat made a smooth surface and the green color showed minimal old chalk lines.
-
Overhead Projectors were used to display writing from a clear film onto whiteboards. They were used until the 1990s.
Project Invention -
Whiteboards enter the classrooms in the 1990s. During this time David Martin and Nancy Knowlton are picturing interactive whiteboard, and soon after founded the company SMART Technologies.
-
The purpose of the smartboards were to guide presenters in small group meetings and at round tables. They were first used in offices then made their way to classrooms.
-
SMART Technolgy company presented their first interactive whiteboard in 1991.
Smartboard Overview -
The company Intel thought the technology had good economic value, so they became any investor in 1992. This gave SMART the resources to continue researching and develop more features/ fix software. bugs.
-
The front projection version of SMART boards were created. They hung from the ceiling and projected bright pictures.
-
In 1993 the third version of smartboard was released with updated software and more capabilities such as connecting to internet and access to multimedia resources.
-
In 2003, SMART created digital vision touch technology which meant the boards could now detect touch, from a hand, pens and the eraser.
Understanding DVTT -
In 2005 a wireless slate was introduced. This allowed teachers to stand about 50 feet away from the board but still writing on the board.
-
The smartboard 600 series was created in 1007. It focused on an aesthetic design and improved software. Series 600
-
In 2010, the smartboard 800 series was released. It had enhanced touch/gesture recognition, and the ability to connect to multiple devices.
-
-
The current smartboards feature Ultra HD and 4k resolution which is great for high quality images and videos.
Cost of Smartboard -
The smartboards continue to improve their interactive whiteboards. Now that AI (artificial intelligence) is becoming popular they are working to incorporate that.
