  • Public Law 88-164

    PL 88-164Public Law 88-164 authorized funds for training profesionals to work with children with special needs and for research and demonstration for students with IDD and deafness. John F. Kennedy had a major interest in this law.
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (PL93-112)

    Section 504This legislation has been brought into play when the rights of individuals with disabilities have been denied or interfered with. It is illegal to deny participation in activities or programs solely because of a disability. Individuals with disabilities must have equal access to programs and services.
    Problems such as failing grades, suspensions, chronic behavior problems, or failure to complete or return homework may qualify a child for additional support under Section 504.
  • Public Law 94-142

    PL 94-142Congress passed PL 94-142, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. This act was to assure that all handicapped children have available to them a free appropriate public education which emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet thier unique needs.
  • Public Law 99-457

    PL 99-457PL 99-457 (Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments of 1986), provided that opportunity by allocating federal funds for the states to develop plans and programs for children and their families from birth on. The title of the Education of the Handicapped Act was changed to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act of 1992

    Extends civil rights to persons with disabilities without regard to race, color, national origin, gender, or religion through Civil Rights Act of 1964.
    The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed July 26, 1990 as Public Law 101-336 (42 U.S.C. Sec. 12101 et seq ) and became effective on January 26, 1992.
  • Public Law 107-110: No Child Left Behind

    Signed by George W. Bush the law was intended to hold school and educators accountable for bringing students to a minimum level of competency. NCLB requires schools to present test data to prove their effectiveness. This law caused problems for children with disabilities. They do not have the same academic expectations as other non-diabled students. Funding is taken away from schools who do not perform well.
  • IDEA 2004

    IDEA 2004IDEA 2004 represents the reauthorization of the basic legislation to strenthen and improve earlier versions. Some of the major changes involved: Quality of personnel, IEP standards, Transition services. The act was signed by George W. Bush on December 3, 2004 and became effective July 1, 2005
