  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    The segregation of students by race was ruled unconstitutional. "separate but equal" ended.
  • National Defence Education Act

    National Defence Education Act
    Provided federal funding to certain areas of education. The legislation supported education in the areas of science, math, and modern foreign languages.
  • Elementary & Secondary Education Act

    Elementary & Secondary Education Act
    Education for low-income children got a boost. Funds were given to school districts on the basis of the number of poor children they have.
  • Title IX

    Title IX
    Forbids discrimination in school based on sex. This act states "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance..."
  • Equal Education Oppurtunity Act

    Equal Education Oppurtunity Act
    Does not allow any discrimination against staff members and students. This includes racial segregation among students.

    Public Law 94-142
    Known as the “Bill of Rights” for children and their parents. Its purposes are to make sure all handicapped children have a free public school education, to make sure the rights of the children and their parents are protected, to help the states provide the education of all handicapped children, and to assure the efforts to educate handicapped children.

    A law that makes a free public education to children with disabilities and ensures special education and related services. The needs of children with disabilities are met from birth to age 18 or 21.

    Gives resources to states to make sure all students reach their full potential
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    Increased the role in holding schools responsible for the academic progress of all students. States are required to tests students in grades 3-8 in math and reading and then once in high school.
