  • "Ye Olde Deluder Satan" Law

    "Ye Olde Deluder Satan" Law
    This law, established in 1647, was the foundation for publicly funded schools and education. This law established requirements for schools in villages with at least 100 people. The early settlers believed that children should learn to read so they could read the bible and not be susceptible to the influence of Satan.
  • Cardinal Principles Report

    Cardinal Principles Report
    Report that helped to develop a more diverse curriculum to include more vocational education for the wide variety of students that were attending public high schools. This report affected the overall curriculum in high schools across the country. They removed the focus from purely academic to also skill oriented education.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    Supreme Court ruling that determined that there was no "separate but equal" in public education. This led to the desegregation of public schools. The process of desegregation was slow, and faced much opposition especially in the southern states.
  • 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    Legislation passed in 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson that increased federal primary and secondary education funding. This legislation created federally funded Head Start and Title I programs. This legislation was an attempt to reduce the inequity of education for children coming from impoverished backgrounds.

    No Child Left Behind Act
    Legislation passed by George W. Bush creating a public accountability system for schools. This legislation requires students to pass standardized tests at intervals throughout their school years. These tests are used as a metric to measure student learning against their peers.
