The Mount Sion monastery was officially blessed by Bishop Thomas Hussey on 7 June 1803.Since the schoolhouse was not yet finished, Rice, Finn, and Grosvenor took up residence but walked each day from Mt Sion to their schools on New Street and Stephen Street.

Edmund’s schooling ministry began a new turning point in 1804, when he was joined with Thomas Grosvenor and Patrick Finn. Grosvenor and Finn, created their own school on new street, as well as joining in on Edmunds school. After the success of opening the New Street school, Edmund’s schoolhouse, still incomplete, adjoined with the New Street school and was officially opened and blessed by Bishop John Power on May 1 1804, when their pupils moved to the new building.

Seven staff, which had been working together creating religious education for boys around Ireland, joined together forming the ‘Presentation Brothers’. The ‘Presentation Sisters’, who was run by Nano Nagle, created this idea for them.

Seven of the staff including Edmund Rice, took religious vows under the authority of Bishop Power of Waterford.Gradually a transformation had taken place amongst the "quay kids" of Waterford, largely attributed to the work of Edmund and his Brothers, who educated, clothed and fed the boys.
