    In the eighteen hundreds the railroad business was expanding quickly. thousands of workers across five states refused to work due to unsafe conditions. the reason that this relates to unions is because the railroad union didn't fulfill its promises.

  • the Pullman strike

    the Pullman strike
    in 1894 the employees at the Pullman car company and were facing 12-hour days and wage cuts. Lasting may 11 to mid July over 250,000 workers went on strike. the reason that this relates to unions because it shows how unions helped people fight for the rights that they wanted for working conditions.

    The Ludlow Massacre of 1941 was a result of people unionizing. A company of mine workers went on strike and got evicted from their company provided housing. Instead of moving away the people built a tent community, the CEO of the company sent in the National Guard and they set off a smoke bomb and open fired into the community killing several men, women, and children. The reason that this is important to unions is because the killings were a direct result of a union.

    post ww1 workers in the steel industry organized a strike to fight low working wages, poor conditions, and coorpoate harassment against union involvment. over 350,000 people were on strike, shuttingdown half of the steel ndustry. the reason that this releates to the union is because the union allowed these people to sefly go on strike.

    Wagner Act
    In 1932 Franklin Roosevelt passed the Wagner act. The Wagner act and it started the National Labor Relations Board and gave private employees the right to form a union. The reason that this is important to unions is because it just gives them more of the already frowning power that they have.

    Taft-Hartley Act
    The Taft-Hartley Act was passed in 1947 that made major changes to the Wagner Act of 1932. The main thing that the Taft-Hartley Act did was that it put a restriction of Labor Unions and their power. This obviously relates to the Union because the government is realizing that the Unions have too much power.

    Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act (WARN)
    The 'WARN' act, passed in 1988 by Ronald Regan. This law stated that employers must tell their employees that they are being laid off 60 days in advance. The reason this is important to unions is because the government is making unions useless by offering workers that same services as them, but for free.
