    First issuance of government-sponsored paper money

    Paper money printed under the government was first established in 1024 in the Sichuan province (the most active center for early printing). By the end of the century, government authorities throughout most of China issues paper money-complete with serial numbers and dire warnings against the printing of counterfeit notes.
