King Charles II of England created the Carolina colony, giving it to the Lords Proprietors who were powerful English men. The land includes what is today North and South Carolina as well as parts of Georgia and Florida.

Culpeper’s Rebellion was led by John Culpeper, an Albemarle settler, against the Lords Proprietors because of the British Navigation Acts. The settlers did not want to pay customs duties on colonial goods.

New Bern, NC was named after Bern, Switzerland, and was home to German and Swiss refugees.

The Tuscarora Indians killed hundreds of colonists in the Pamlico settlements. They were angry with the white men for taking their land and planting fields over their need to hunt.

William Tryon became the new governor and wanted to improve North Carolina. He wanted the colony to be better organized and for the colonists to be more respectful of government officials.

Governor Tryon convinced the General Assembly to have a permanent seat in New Bern.

Backcountry residents were angry that Governor Tryon had not stopped bad government. Hundreds of taxpayers signed petitions for regulation.

The Regulators fought the Battle of Alamance against Governor Tryon and the militia, but they lost.
