  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    First battles of the Revolutionary War. Troops were sent to collect colonial weapons eventually running into a very tense militia.
  • Declaration of Independence

    The Declaration of Independence declares independence from Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence outline rights .
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Key turning point of the war. Signaled French that the colonists had a chance of winning the war . The French then declared war on the British ,
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Led to discussion of the surrender of British .British surrendered at Yorktown which caused the American Revolution to cease.
  • Northwest Ordinance

    Led to signing of the Treaty of Paris. Ended the American Revolutionary War . Ceded control of the British territory from the Appalachian mountains to the Mississippi river to American control . Set the precedent for how new states enter the Union; on equal footing.
  • Alien & Sedition Acts

    Bills signed by John Adams that prevented immigrants who weren't citizens into the United States.
  • Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions

    Political statements written by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison that states had the right to enforce absolute laws with the consent of the constitution.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Thomas Jefferson purchased the treaty from France due to finances Napoleon needed for the French Revolution.
  • Marbury v. Madison

    U.S Supreme court case that discussed the aspects of judicial review , basically the power of the American court.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Balanced the power of free states and slave states . Admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    A policy that opposed European influence in America.
  • Nullification Crisis

    Influenced states rights which were rights that allowed states the right to declare federal law void if the state is harmed in any way . Resulted in the federal government passing a high protective tariff which upset John C. Calhoun where he attempted to nullify the tariff.
  • Texas Annextion

    Americans in controlled Mexican territories of Texas declared independence from Mexico when Mexico outlawed slavery. The US acquired the Republic of Texas by adding territory .
  • Oregon Treaty

    Occupied by the Americans, the British and the Spanish. Headlined "54 40 degree" or Fight!". After Adams-Onis treaty signed Spanish claimed territory. Negotiations led to the Oregon Treaty granting US control of the South of the 49th parallel avoiding war.
  • Mexican Cession

    Made up most of the South Western United States , which was acquired after the Mexican-American War . The Mexican Cession completed Manifest Destiny through giving American control of land from the Atlantic to the Pacific .
  • Compromise of 1850

    Admitted California as a free state. Wanted a stronger enforcement of the fugitive slave law. Wanted popular sovereignty within the Mexican Cession. Abolish slave trade in Washington.
  • Kansas- Nebraska Act

    It allowed the people to decide whether they wanted to allow slavery within their borders.
  • Bleeding Bloody Kansas

    A violent debate on the issue of slavery and anti-slavery within the Kansas territory.
  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    First battle of the American Civil War. Located in Charleston , South Carolina
  • Battle of Bull Run

    Union troops had the upper hand in the beginning, causing the Confederacy to go triumphant . It also caused a shock to those who felt as if the war would end early and those who were unprepared. Lincoln replaced McDowell and placed General G. McClellan with the belief of him leading the Union to victory.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The "Single Bloodiest Day of the War". Losing 23,000 soldiers and wounded.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Declared freedom of slaves within states who were in rebellion. It however, did not free ALL slaves. Allowed slaves to fight with the Union.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Occurred in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. Lincoln visited the Gettysburg battlefield to dedicate a cemetery for the fallen solider.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    General Grant laid siege against Vicksburg after many attempts of capturing the city. Lincoln believed this was the key to ending the war. This surrender caused a split in the Confederacy in two.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    This battle was a Union victory that stopped the 2nd invasion of the north. General Robert E. Lee retreated Virginia.
  • 13th amendment

    Abolished Slavery
  • 14th amendment

    Granted citizenship to all people. For example: Birthright, equal protection, and punishment of the confederacy.
  • 15th amendment

    Granted all men the right to vote, including African Americans.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Debated towards the statement "separate but equal" , which set back civil rights in the US
