The War of 1812 was brought on by the British harassing the Americans by impressment of sailors and arming of American Indians. The US won the war.

There were 11 free states and 11 slave states when Missouri wanted to become a (slave) state. This would upset the balance of power in Congress between free & slave states, so this compromise was reached. Missouri was admitted as a slave state, and Maine as a free state. A line was drawn through the Louisiana territory- below it would be slave, and above it would be free.

Texas had gained independence from Mexico in 1836. It was annexed by the US in 1845.

The treaty ending the Mexican American war ceded more territory to the US: California, Nevada, Utah, parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, & Wyoming. The US paid $15 million for the territory.
