As individuals become more aware of their data privacy and data mining issues the concern for legislation produced by the FCAA that effects the way we use social media and the internet and privacy settings became a hot topic on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Social media users urged these sites to update their privacy setting with more transparency and safety.

Originally started as an effort by activist Tarana Burke and later set fire after a tweet by actress Alyssa Milano, the me too movement became a viral cry for millions of women, and some men, against blatant abuse of power and workplace sexual harassment. The #MeToo was used more than 19 million times primarily on Twitter with a record number of mentions on September 9th. Social Media allowed the protest to go vial and create a safe space to share and call out injustice.

An election that was largely discussed online proved the power of social media was the 2020 election affecting every faucet of social media with conversation. Trump's official Facebook receiving 30.6 million likes, 3.5 million to Joe Biden. Trump also showcased millions more subscribers than Biden on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube and on Twitter Trump averaged 100 messages a day, overall social media helped to motivate people to vote and helped to educate them on the processes.

Blackout Tuesday was an online collective action to protest racism and police brutality following the murder of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor, businesses abstained from music release or operation and minimal programming occurred that day.
All social media platforms were utilized, primarily Instagram where people would post a black square picture in solidarity.
