Disruption Timeline

  • ISIS

    ISIS
ISIS is known for killing dozens of people at a time and carrying out public executions, crucifixions, and other acts. They used Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, and Facebook. They tried to use social media to influence people to join. They also used social media as a tool to convey multiple narratives to recruit and bolster their presence. It was also used as a way to spread their message.
  • Black Lives Matter

    Black Lives Matter
This movement started on July 13, 2013, in response to the death of Trayvon Martin. Their goal is to intervene in violence inflicted on black communities by the state and vigilantes. The platforms used are Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. They utilize a hashtag as well that is; #blacklivesmatter. A good tactic of this is to post photographs as well as personal experiences to include a lot of emotion into each post. This tactic helps people feel emotionally connected.
  • "Take a Knee" National Anthem Protest

"Take a Knee" National Anthem Protest
This disruption started a little less than 2 years ago when professional athlete Colin Kaepernick knelt during the national anthem. The main reason for doing this was not in hopes to disrespect military veterans, but was to silently protest against a country that "oppresses black people." Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook are the platforms that are used for this issue. The main tactic that was/is used for this issue is the hashtag. The #takeaknee has raised awareness.
  • "Me too" Movement

    "Me too" Movement
This phrase started in 2006 but hadn't actually become a movement until October 15, 2017. It was started as a way for women to share their survival stories of sexual abuse and raise awareness. The main social media platforms that were used to spread awareness was Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. The use of the #metoo helped the movement to spread immensely--especially on Twitter where it all started. People were encouraged to share their experiences of overcoming such abuse.
  • Starbucks Incident

    Starbucks Incident
Two black men were arrested in a Philadelphia Starbucks because they were sat in Starbucks without having bought anything. This became a problem because of profiling--this would never happen to a white man even if they were doing the same thing. This spread through Twitter as well as Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube. It became part of the issue of Black Lives Matter because they were treated unfairly just based off of their race.
