The movement began with the shooting and killing of Trayvon Martin in Feb 2012 by officer George Zimmerman. Further demonstrations began after other instances of police brutality and killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. A Facebook post set off the online campaign and then the hastag #blacklivesmatter on twitter continued to carry the protests and campaign.
