    The Missouri Compromise was crafted by Henry Clay of Kentucky. This compromise admitted Missouri to the Union as a slave state and Maine as free state. This helped maintain the balance of power between slave and free states. In addition, a line was drawn at 36°30' parallel, below which slavery would be allowed. Above this line, slavery was prohibitied. This event led to war because the people recognized that the compromise did not settle the future of slavery.

    The first opening shots of the Civil War was fired at Fort Sumter. No one was killed in the 33-hour bombardment. It was a bloodless opening to the bloodiest war in American history. After 33 hours of heavy shelling, the defenders of the fort hauled down the Stars and Stripes and replaced it with the white flag of surrender. This lead to war, it was the first battle in the civil war. There was so much conflict that it finally came to relization that they would have to fight a war to end slavery.
