Developments in Vietnam during the French Colonial Era

  • 1st Treaty of Saigon

    After the ceding three ports (Annam-Central, Tankin-North, and Cochinchina-South), union was formed under French Colonials . Joined by Cambodia and Laos, formed French Indochina
  • Go East!

    The first was the Đông Du ("Go East") Movement started in 1905 by Phan Bội Châu. Châu's plan was to send Vietnamese students to Japan to learn modern skills, so that in the future they could lead a successful armed revolt against the French.
  • Leadership of Nguyễn Ái Quốc

    Nguyễn Ái Quốc was a leftist revolutionary living in France since 1911. He participated in founding the French Communist Party and in 1924 traveled to the Soviet Union to join the Comintern.
  • Ho Chi Minh established the Indochinese Communist Party

    Ho Chi Minh established the Indochinese Communist Party to fight for independence from French colonial rule
  • French battle Communists

    During the 1930s, the Vietnamese Communist Party was nearly wiped out under French suppression with the execution of top leaders.
  • Japan controls Indochina

    Japan assumed effective control of French Indochina.
  • Creation of the Viet Minh

    Ho Chi Minh starts the Viet Minh. Leninism is thought of as an ideological weapon to serve Vietnamese nationalism against French colonialism.
  • Bao Dai declares partial Vietnamese Independence

    Japan forced Emperor Bao Dai to declare the independence of northern and central Vietnam. After the war, the emperor stepped down and Communist leader Ho Chi Minh assumed power.
