Politically Driven Imprisonment
Diderot's criticism of the government caused his jailing. While imprisoned, he read profusely (specifically Paradise Lost) and was visited often by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a fellow writer and philosopher. His Relationship with Catherine the Great
After receiving an offer to buy his library and the pre-emptive salary as caretaker, Diderot was obligated to visit Catherine the Great. He called their nearly daily conversations as 'man to man', which suggests a sense of camaraderie between them.
