    ZwaanendaelResidents of Pilottown watched anxiously as a small British boat skidded to a halt on the sands of Lewes beach. Several sailors hopped out of the boat and held it steady for the red-coated British officers, who disembarked with little fanfare. A short distance away, 50 men from the Delaware militia stood in formation on the Delaware sand.

  • Delaware flourished under English rule

    Newark, Dover and Wilmington were all founded during the early 1700s. The lumber industry brought thousands to work in sawmills built along the Delaware River. By 1760, nearly 35,000 people lived in the Delaware region. During the 1760s, England forced severe taxes on the American colonies. Delawareans and other colonists refused to pay these taxes.

    Hudson, Henry, fl. 1607–11, English navigator and explorer. He was hired (1607) by the English Muscovy Company to find the Northeast Passage to Asia. He failed, and another attempt (1608) to find a new route was also fruitless. Engaged (1609) for the same purpose by the Dutch East India Company, he sailed in the Half Moon to Spitsbergen, where extreme ice and cold brought his crew near mutiny. Hudson, determined not to lose his reputation as an explorer.

    InfoKent County native John Dickinson, became the "Penman of the Revolution." Patriot leaders Thomas McKean and Caesar Rodney convinced the Colonial Assembly to declare itself separated from British and Pennsylvania rule on June 15, 1776. Caesar Rodney gave the delegation the votes needed to cast Delaware's vote for Independence.
