Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, heirs to the Austrian throne, were killed by a Serbian Nationalist, perhaps prompted by the Ottoman militant group "Black Hand". The British vessel RMS Lusitania was sunk by German U-boats through the German policy of unrestricted submarine warfare. In the sinking of the ship, over a thousand passengers died- including over a hundred Americans. This event caused tensions to rise between the U.S. and Germany.
