Deadly Tsunamis - Jayden Rothwell

  • Lisbon Earthquake (Portugal)

    Lisbon Earthquake (Portugal)
The earthquake almost totally destroyed Lisbon, and the estimated magnitude was in the range of 8.5-9.0 on the moment magnitude scale. The death toll in Lisbon alone was between 10,000 and 100,000 people making it one of the most deadliest earthquakes in history. It’s epicenter was in the middle of the Altlamtic ocean as well.
  • Krakatoa Eruption (Java/ Sumatra)

    Krakatoa Eruption (Java/ Sumatra)
The eruption was one of the most deadliest and most destructive volcanic events in recorded history. At least 36,417 deaths are attributed to the eruption and the tsunami it created. The eruption was heard 3,000 miles away, and 20 million tons of sulfur was released into the atmosphere.
  • Aleutian Earthquake (Alaska)

    Aleutian Earthquake (Alaska)
The shock had a moment magnitude of 8.6. It resulted in 165-173 casualties and over $26 million in damage. The seafloor along the fault was elevated triggering waves at heights from 45-130 feet!
  • Great Chilean Earthquake (Chile)

    Great Chilean Earthquake (Chile)
The most powerful earthquake ever recorded. Various studies have placed it at 9.4–9.6 on the moment magnitude scale. It occurred in the afternoon and lasted approximately 10 minutes. The resulting tsunami affected southern Chile, Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand, southeast Australia and the Aleutian Islands.Waves as high as 10.7 metres (35 ft) were recorded. The total number of fatalities from the earthquake and tsunamis have been published, ranging between 1,000 and 7,000.
  • Good Friday Earthquake (Alaska)

    Good Friday Earthquake (Alaska)
Across south-central Alaska, ground fissures, collapsing structures, and tsunamis resulting from the earthquake caused about 139 deaths.Lasting four minutes and thirty-eight seconds, the magnitude 9.2 megathrust earthquake was the most powerful earthquake recorded in North American history, and the second most powerful earthquake recorded in world history. 600 miles of fault ruptured at once and moved up to 60 feet (about 500 years of stress buildup).
  • Hokkaido Earthquake (Japan)

    Hokkaido Earthquake (Japan)
It had a magnitude of 7.7 on the moment magnitude scale and a maximum felt intensity of 8 on the Mercalli intensity scale. It triggered a major tsunami that caused deaths on Hokkaidō and in southeastern Russia, with a total of 230 fatalities recorded. The island of Okushiri was hardest hit, with 165 casualties from the earthquake, the tsunami and a large landslide.
  • Papue New Guinea Quake (Papua New Guinea)

Papue New Guinea Quake (Papua New Guinea)
The 1998 Papua New Guinea earthquake occurred on July 17 with a moment magnitude of 7.0 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of 8. The event occurred on a reverse fault near the north coast region of Papua New Guinea, 16 mi from the coast near Aitape, and caused a large undersea landslide which caused a tsunami that hit the coast, killing between at least 2,183 and 2,700 people and injuring thousands.
  • Sumatra Earthquake (Indonesia)

    Sumatra Earthquake (Indonesia)
With an epicentre off the west coast of northern Sumatra and a magnitude of 9.1–9.3, reaching a Mercalli intensity up to 9 in certain areas. It was an undersea megathrust earthquake caused by a rupture along the fault between the Burma Plate and the Indian Plate creating many tsunamis. That became known collectively as the Boxing Day tsunamis. These tsunamis flooded communities along the coasts of the Indian Ocean and killed an estimated 227,898 people in 14 countries.
  • Samoa Earthquake (Samoan Islands)

    Samoa Earthquake (Samoan Islands)
The submarine earthquake occurred in an extensional environment and had a moment magnitude of 8.1 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of 6. It was the largest earthquake of 2009.Zealand scientists determined that the waves measured 46 ft at their highest.more than 189 people were killed, especially children, most of them in Samoa.
  • Chile Earthquake(Chile)

    Chile Earthquake(Chile)
Having a magnitude of 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale, with intense shaking lasting for about three minutes. According to official sources, 525 people lost their lives, 25 people went missing and about 9% of the population in the affected regions lost their homes.the Chilean quake would cost insurance companies between 4 and 7 billion dollars.
  • Tohouk Earthquake(Japan)

    Tohouk Earthquake(Japan)
The Tohoku earthquake that struck Japan on 11th March 2011 was one of the biggest earthquakes recorded in the last 100 years and caused shaking at the surface that lasted 6 minutes. It was originally read as an 8.9 magnitude quake but was recalculated as a magnitude 9 as more data became available. The main quake was followed by over 5000 aftershocks. the earthquake triggered a 39 m high tsunami wave report confirms 15,896 deaths, 6,157 injured, and 2,537 people missing.
