    The First Fleet
    The First Fleet arrived in Sydney on the 26th of January 1788. The first fleet is a group of 11 ships. The first fleet came to Australia because Britain’s jails were too full. They thought that Australia would be a good place to build more jails and small colonies. The names of the ships in the first fleet are H.M.S Sirius, H.M.S Supply, The Alexander, The Borrowdale, The Charlotte, The Fishburn, The Friendship, The Golden Grove, The Lady Penrhyn, The Prince of Wales and The Scarborough.

  • Settelment of S.A.

    Edward Gibbon Wakefield brought up his idea of a community settled by balancing land, capital and labour. He brought it up in 1836 in South Australia. Lots of people thought it was a great idea.In the end colonial William light designed Adelaide.

    During February 1851 Edward Hargraves found small pieces of gold at Lewis ponds creek, near Bathurst, in New South Wales. During that time Australia’s population tripled. This was the beginning of the Gold Rush. The gold rush went on for a few years after he found the gold.
  • Burke and wills

    Burke and Wills went on an expedition from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria, so that Melbourne would be the centre of communications. They started their exhibition on the 20th of August 1860 and they died at the dig tree a few years later.
  • federation

    On the first of January 1901 politicians decided that it was time for federation. Federation means to make a group of colonies into a nation. Politicians decided that Australia would have a vote for federation. They were delayed for a while in the 1800s. In the end most of Australia voted for federation.
