Dred Scott was a African American man who lived in a free state that prohibited slavery. Even though he was in a free state the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that he was not entitled to his freedom. They also stated that African Americans could not be citizens of the United States. The decision ended up driving the country closer towards the civil war. -
The 13th Amendment abolished slavery throughout America. It got rid of involuntary servitude except for punishments for crimes. After it was passed it got ratified by 27 of the 36 states.
