    The United States Penitentiary, Lewisburg (USP Lewisburg) is a medium-security federal prison in Pennsylvania for male inmates. It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice. An adjacent satellite prison camp houses minimum-security male offenders. Originally named North Eastern Penitentiary, USP Lewisburg was one of four federal prisons opened in 1932. It was designed by Alfred Hopkins.

The act created the United States Sentencing Commission, an independent body within the judicial branch of the federal government and charged it with promulgating guidelines for federal sentencing. The purpose of the Commission was to examine unwarranted disparity in federal sentencing policy, among other things.

    The First Step Act is federal legislation that improves conditions and allows for the early release of federal inmates convicted in the Federal District Court. This law approved reduced sentences for drug offenses, early release for good behavior, early release for sick inmates, additional protections for female inmates, and transfers for inmates to be closer to their families.
