Conflicts between business and labor

  • HayMarket Strike

    Employees wanted to cut work hours to 8 hours. Workers found out that many other employees were given the 8 hour workday. During a meeting, an unknown person threw a bomb. The police fired back and the crowd attacked, leaving 73 policemen were wounded and 6 died.
  • Sugar Cane Workers Strike

    Many workers wanted a livable working wage, sugarcane workers decided to unionize. Leading to many African American workers dead by gun shot.
  • Homestead strike

    The steelworkers were tired of bad work conditions, bad wages, and worse hours. Many workers were seriously injured while working. The workers decided to make a union again the bad work conditions of the steel mill. During this strike, an order of private guards showed up. The strike ended in a war against the private guards and the steelworkers leaving many workers dead.
  • Sliver Mines Unrest

    Miners created a union to fight against the cut of their wages. In the attempt to destroy the union police offers had to arrest over 1,000 workers.
  • Pullman strike

    Railroad workers went on strike because of cut wages, the workers decided to stop the traffic of the railroads. The government efforced around 14,000 troops to attack railroad workers leaving around 30 dead.
  • Textile strike

    Workers went on strike due to cut wages and in hopes of cutting hours. Martial Law was put in effect as a consequence of the strike
    Police attacked workers, beat, and arrested them. Most of the workers being women.
