  • Pascal's Pascaline

    Pascal's Pascaline
Blaise Pascal invented the Pascaline- a calculator that functioned using cogs. This was the first practical mechanical alculator and was capable of manual addition and subtraction.
  • Period: to

    Early computers

These early computers were quite big and were machines that would carry out repetitive tasks done by humans. These tasks do not require too much thinking.
  • Leibniz's invention

    Leibniz's invention
German mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz cam up with a more advanced version of the pascaline, and instead of using cogwheels it used a stepped drum. This machine could add, subtract, multiply. divide, and even work out square roots.
  • Binary code

    Binary code
Leibniz also invented the binary number system which computers now use today. The binary number system is also known as base 2, where every time it comes to 2, 1 is carried. Computers use the base two number system instead of the base 10 (which we use today) because the circuits in a computer only have two states, on and off. The binary code is ueful because it also only uses two symbols , 1 and 0. Therefore, 1 reoresents on and 2 represents off.
  • Charles Babbages's difference engine

    Charles Babbages's difference engine
Charles Babbage and Ada Bryon design the difference engine, a machine with functions such as manual input and memory.
This machine can tabulate (chart) polynomial functions.
babbage design the machine but failed to build them, and the actual machine was constructed in London on 2002, 153 years after it was designed.
  • Period: to

computers that were more than just calculators

  • Alan Turing's Colossus

    Alan Turing's Colossus
Alan Turing was a famous mathmatician. He invented the Colossus, a giant machine, the height of a room, during the world war. This machine helped Britain greatly during the world war because it could decode the german enigma.
This machine is now being kept as a historical artifact at bletchly park, London.
  • World's first programmable computer

    World's first programmable computer
Konrad Zuse- german engineer, constructed the Z1, worlds first programmable binary computer.
On 1941, Konrad Zuse completed the Z3, which used electronical switches.
  • The ABC

    The ABC
Atanasoff Berry Computer- the ABC, a computer that was 1000 times more accurate than the differential analyzer.
  • The ENIAC

     The ENIAC
John Mauchly and J,Presper Eckert ivented the ENIAC, a computer that used vacuum tubes instead of relay switches.
The ENIAC stands for Electonic Numerical Integrator and Computer.
  • Integrated circuit

    Integrated circuit
John Bardeen , Walter Brattain, William Shockley, working in bell telephone laboratories developed a new technology for the American public telephone system so the electiric signals could be amplified and carried further. They created a point contact transistor using semiconductors, ehich formed the basis of transistors and was better that the vacuum tube, because they were very small and reliable, and used no power at all unless in operation.
  • microprocessor 8080

    microprocessor 8080
Intel lauched a microprocessor known as 8080.
  • Apple ][

    Apple ][
    Apple ][ launched. microcomputer
With disk drive unit, easy to store data.
    50,000 sold.
  • Windows 1.0

    Windows 1.0
Microsoft's first OS (operating system) was launched. it was called the Windows 1.0.
  • www- world wide web

    www- world wide web
Tim Berners Lee was a british computer scientist. In his days, people did not have shared information on the web and they had to log on to different computers to get each peice of information.
The only method to do this at the time was to connect many coomputers together. Tim saw a way to fix this problem using hypertext.
  • Google

    Google
Larry page and Sergey Brinn constructed Google, a now widely used search engine that can generate up to 7 million results in less than half a second.
Larry Page and Sergey Brinn met at Stanford university. They first came uo with a search engine called BackRub. Eventually it took up too much bandwidth, so they came up with Google, a wordplay on the mathematical term googol, which is a number with one followed by infinite 0s. They wanted to have a seemilngly infinite amount of info on the web.
  • Apple OS

    Apple OS
Apple's first operating system, the mac OS, was launched.
  • Period: to

    The user revolution

  • First apple iPhone released

    First apple iPhone released
The apple iPhone is an invention that transformed the world of technoloy. At th etime, the iPhone was new because nothing like it was invented before, and many touchscreen smartohones from other companies were made.
  • Google SDC

    Google SDC
The new google self driving car has proved that robots, or artificial intelligence, has become more and more advanced. The self driving car has proved that now robots can handle comlicated tasks that humans can do, and therefore is a great leap forward in robotics and computer programming.
