    This was the first state in the Northwest Territory to outlaw slavery. This state was a major player in the early emancipation efforts.

    This compromise was written by Henry Clay, the same man that wrote the Compromise of 1850. It balanced the slave and free states when Maine and Missouri requested statehood. Slavery was also prohibited in the rest of the land gained from the Louisiana Purchase.

    This provided a huge way for slaves to escape from slavery and support the northern side. This would play a huge role when the Compromise of 1850 came out because this helped slaves escape the South and it would make it harder to enforce the Fugitive Slave Law.
