The exact date is unknown but it happened in 1840. The phrase was coined by John O'Sullivan. It was used by politicans and leaders to explain and revitalized a sense of "mission" or national destiny for many Americans. -

North: California admitted as a free state, Slave trade prohibited in Washington D.C, Texas loses boundary dispute with New Mexico.
South: No slavery restrictionin Utah/New Mexico territories, Slave holding permitted in Washington D.C, Texas gets $10 mil, Fugitive Slave Law. -
Lincoln's Election
Lincoln was nominated by the Republican National Convention meeting in Chicago. He faced against Stephan Douglas and John C. Breckinridge and also John Bell. He won with the 40% of the popular vote and he was the first Republican to win the presidency. -
American Civil War
Started because the South was not pleased with Lincoln's winning the election. Fearing they would lose their economic status and agriculture, the South decided to form their own nation. The war officially started when Confederate troops fired on Ford Sumpter. -
Woman's Suffrage (19th Amendment)
The 19th Amendmen passed by Congress guaranteed the right for woman to vote. Lots and lots of woman activist and suffrage supported did all they could to win the right to vote.
