    Christopher Columbus early life

    In about 1451 in italy a son of a wool merchant was born. Christopher Columbus. As a teenager he got a job on a merchant ship. One day his ship was attacked and his ship sunk. He escaped on a piece of wood and went to lisbon. He studied mathematics, navigation and started planning his plan.

    in 1492 Captain Columbus sailed with 3 ships looking around for islands, gold and riches that he had promised to the spanish monarchs. He didnt find much and returned to spain leaving 40 men behind.

    later voyages

    6 months later in 1493 Columbus returned to the 'americans' that he had found and left his brothers and hundreds of slaves to rebuild. He continued looking for riches. He sent hundreds of slaves to the queen and she was horrified. In 1498 he sailed across the atlantic for the third time. Because of all the slaves he took in 1502 his noble title was removed. Christopher columbus abandoned 2 out of 4 ships because of an attack and he left and returned to spain and died in 1506

    The first voyage

    It was nearly impossible to reach asia from europe on land because of all the dangerous things. So they sailed across the the west african coast and the cape of good hope. But columbus thought the earth was smaller and that he could cut corners. It wasnt until 1491 that the spanish queen and king agreed with his plan because they both wanted money.

    The age of discovery

    During the 15th to 16th centuries, European nations sponsored expeditions in hope they could find riches and land.The Portuguese were the first to do this. Starting in 1420 small ships carried gold, spices and slaves across the african coast.
  • His legacy

    He did not discover america as their were already people living on it and he was not even the first person to discover the new world. Columbus is known as a person who changed and shaped the world.
