    Korea begins Industrialization

    Korea begins industrialization/modernization under influence of Japan (they acquired technologies very rapidly (in just 4 decades they adopted ideas/technologies that had been developed over 300 years)
  • Treaty of Amity

    1876 Korea Signed a Treaty of Amity with Japan- which benefitted Japan more than Korea but allowed Korea to maintain it’s independence. While it was unequal for Korea, they were looking for one of the 3 empirical powers to side with (ie China, Russia, and Japan)
  • Treaty of Tientsin

    The Treaty of Tientsin gave Japan (and China) the right to send troops into Korea
  • Peasant Rebellion

    Peasants of Korea rebelled because the magistrate of gobu (a region) made unfair laws forcing people to move and work in such a way that he could get rich off bogus fines

    Sino-Japanese War

    China broke the tientsin treaty, leading Japan to fight with them over control of Korea.
  • Treaty of Shimonoseki

    Ends the Sino-Japanese War, making some parts of Korea independent, and awarding Japan massive amounts of silver from China.

    Russo-Japanese War

    Threatend by Japan, European forces join together to try and take Korea from Japan. It ended in the Treaty of Portsmouth, facilitated by President Theodore Roosevelt.
  • Korea gains independence from Japan
