    Thomas Newcomen built the first steam engine which is used to help clear the deep coal mines of water and causes a ripple effect to help begin the industrial revolution. Because of all the coal miners could mine, Britain had excess resources so they focused on inventing new objects and tools.
  • The "Flying Shuttle" is Created

    The "Flying Shuttle" is Created
    John Kay invented the flying shuttle which was an improvement for weaving cloths during the 17th century. Before weaving could only be as long as some ones hands, because the person had to pass the shuttle back and forth through his hands. But thanks to the flying shuttle, the thread would go be shot forwards and backwards.

    VideoThe first threshing machine was created by Andrew Meikle. It is a machine used to separate the kernels of grain from the stalks. It was a big help because people just put the plants in the slots and the machine would do the rest. Eventually it got replaced by the combine, which is able to cut and thresh a crop.

    James Watt created the better steam engine. This was a lot more efficient that Newcomens because it was more power efficient and not a lot of steam was lost during the machine was used. Eventually Watts steam engine was used inside of factories and more places that Newcomens steam engine.

    Video On January 2, 1785 Edmund Cartwright invented the first power loom. Throughout the years he made his invention better by inventing a steam engine that used alcohol. The power loom was steam-powered and it was an invention that combined threads to make cloth. His invention was a mechanically operated version of a regular loom.

    This was created by Eli Whitney. It was used to separate the cotton from the seeds to create cloths and textiles. This was important because all the cotton that Britain got from the US they were able to quickly separate it from the seeds and sell more. With more selling and buying the economy grew a lot.

    Thomas Edison created the first light bulb in the 1800s. But then he and a lot of other scientists tried to find a material for the light bulb that would make it long lasting, durable and with a high melting point. The first light bulb they created had 13.5 hours of lasting. Then he used bamboo-derived filaments in 1880 that lasted up to 1200 hours.

    Video The Clermont was the first steamboat ever built that was practical, financial and successful. Its first successful trip was 150 miles up the Hudson River from New York City to Albany. It took about 30 hours. Fulton did not construct an engine by himself, he ordered one from the Watt so that it could adapt to his boat. Earlier inventors would construct their own engine and their boat would not work as good.

    People rioted and destroyed machines because they were scared that the machines would replace them. The riots were led by King Ludd or General Ned Ludd. Who was like a mythical figure who lived in Sherwood Forest like Robin Hood. But the riots made the working conditions in new textile factories difficult.

    On March 7, 1876 Alexander Graham Bell invented the first electric telephone. He started his career as wanting to help deaf people, then that lead him to making the telephone. It started as a microphone and then added more phone-like things to it and it was called his “electric speech machine”, which is now called a telephone.
