    after Japan's surrender in WWII, the allies gained control of the Korean peninsula. The Soviet Union and U.S. agreed to devide the country in half. Soviets took the North and the U.S. took the South. The North Koreans attacked the South, trying to unite korea into a Communist country. the war ended in July 27, 1953

    the Soviet Union and the Communist nations of Eastern Europe formed their own alliance called the Warsaw Pact
  • Bay of Pigs

    the U.S. government secretly trained approximateley 1,500 Cubans to invade Cuba. the cubans were supposed the start a "massive Cuban uprising" against Castro. instead, the invaders were quickly defeated .
  • cuban missle crisis

    a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missles in Cuba. after a fourteen day standoff, Soviet leaders removed missiles when the U.S. agreed to remove missiles from Turkey and promised not to attack Cuba.

    aka Strategic Arms Limitations Talks. the talks led to agreements limiting the number of nuclear weapons held by each side of the superpowers.
