  • Manifest Destiny

    Colonists believed a movemoment westward was predestined by God. They wanted to expand to the Pacific and even settlers who didn't go believed it was obvious they should move west.
  • Missouri Compromise 1820-1821

    A line at 36d30' was made and all states all the line were free states and the states below the line were slaves states except Missouri, Madison was president during this time.
  • Santa Fe Trail

    Santa Fe Trail was a 780 mile trail made by the native americans and was the most popular. It went from Missouri to New Mexico which was the trail traders and settlers took.
  • San Felipe de Austin

    In 1821 Texas was under Mexican rule and Stephen F. Austin would supply the Americans rushing for inexpensive land. Austin's father had a land grant from Spain for land from Brazos and Colorado Rivers but he died and could not carry out his plans. He issued 297 land grants by 1825, by 1830 there were 20,000 Americans in Texas.
  • The Liberator

    Written by William Lloyd Garrison, a radical white abolitionist. Antislavery paper. Written to deliver a command: immediate emancipation.
  • Nat Turner Rebellion

    In august 1831, a virginia slave who led a prominent rebellion. Turner, and mor3e than 50 followers attacked four plantations and killed abput 60 whites. Many of them were eventually executed
  • Mexico Abolishes Slavery

    People were upset because Texas was a slave state.
  • Stephen F. Austin goes to Jail

    Austin conceded to the will of the people, but President Santa Ana refused to grant Texas separate status from Coahuila and threw Austin in prison on suspicion of inciting insurrection.
  • Oregon Trail

    It streched from Independce Missouri to Oregon City, Oregon. So people went by foot others rode wagons. After going through basically Boise, Idaho it proved wagons could go through the trail.
  • Texas Enters the United States

    In March 1845, angered by U.S Texas Negotiation on annexation the Mexican gov recalled its embassador from washington on december 29 1845, texas entered the union
  • Mexican-American War

    The Mexican-American War (1846-1848) marked the first U.S. armed conflict chiefly fought on foreign soil. It pitted a politically divided and militarily unprepared Mexico against the expansionist-minded administration of U.S. The Mexican government was also encouraging border raids and warning that any attempt at annexation would lead to war.
  • The North Star

    Written by Frederick Douglass, escaped bondage to become an eloquent critic of slavery. Named after star that leaded runaways to freedom.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe

    The United States and Mexico signedthis treaty in which Mexico agreed to the Rio Grande as the border between Texas and Mexico and ceded the New Mexico and California territories not in the US. The US agreed to pay 15m dollars for the Mexican cession, which inclued present day California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah most of Arizona and parts of Colorado and Wyoming
  • Harriet Tubman

    One of the most famous conductors of underground railroad. Born a slave in Maryland in 1849 she heard she was going to be sold, and escaped to Philadelphia. Helped about 300 slaves.
  • Abolition

    The movement to abolish slavery became the most important of a series of reform movements in America.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The compromise provided that California be admitted to the union as a free state. The compromise also provided a new fugitive slave law. Popular soveriegnty- the right to vote for or against slavery
  • The Fugitive Slave Act

    Alleged fugitive slaves were not entitled to a trial by jury. Any one convicted of helping a fugitive was fined 1000 dollars. Many northerners resisted the acts.
  • Underground Railroad

    African Americans and White abolitionists developed a secret network of people who would, at great risk to themselves, hide fugitive slaves. This was known as underground railroads.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Written by Harriet Beacher Stowe. Stressed that slavery was not just a political contest, but also a great moral struggle. Increased hatred towards slavery.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Proposed by Douglas, that would divide area into 2 territories Nebraska in the north, and Kansas in the South.
  • Dread vs Standford

    A slave whose owner took him from the slave state of Missouri to free territory and back. Claimed he was free because he lived in Illinois. Court ruled against him, claiming he couldn’t be a citizen.
  • Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas Debates

    Didn’t agree on how to remove slaver, both disliked it. competing for US Senate. Douglas won the senate seat.
  • John Browns raid, Harpers Ferry

    John Brown believed it was time for an uprising. He gathered 21 men black and white into Herpers Ferry, Virginia to seize the federal arsenal and begin a slave arising. Brown was put to death, sparking riots
  • Abraham Lincoln becomes President

    Lincoln appeared to be moderate in hs views, pledged to halt further spread of slavery. He won woth no votes in the slave states.
  • Formation of the Confederacy

    Delegates form the secessionists states met in Montgomery Alabama in 1861, formed the confederate states of Alaska. Protected and recognized slavery in new territories. Jefferson Davis was president. Mississippi, Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Louisiana
  • Battle of Bull Run

    Bull Run, 25 miles away from Washington D.C, The battle was seesaw affair. Confederate reinforcement helped with the first southern victory. Confederate morale soared, many soldiers went home
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    Fort summer located in Charleston harbor. At 430 am on April 12 confederate batteries began thundering away to the cheers of Charleston citizens. Struggle between North and South was underway
  • Battle at Antietam

    On September 17 near a creek called Antietam, McClellan fourth Lee. More than 26000 casualties. McClellan decided to do nothing the next day, Lincoln removed him from command
  • Corruption

    A draft that forced men to serve in the army. In the north, conscription led to draft riots.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Issued by Lincoln on 1863. Did not free any slaves immediately, applied to areas behind confederate lines. Gave war a moral purpose to fight.
  • Income Tax

    A tax that takes a specified percentage of an individuals income.
  • Battle at Gettysburg

    One of the most decisive battles. Confederate soldiers led by AP Hill encountered several Brigades of union cavalry under the command of John Buford. Northerners won
  • Battle at Vicksburg

    After food became so low they had to eat dogs, the confederates asked Grant for terms of Surrender. The union had achieved another objective; the confederacy was cut in two.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Ceremony held to dedicate a cemetery in Gettysburg. President Lincoln spoke, and united America.
  • Sherman's March

    Sherman began march through Georgia to the Sea, creating a wide path of destruction. By mid November he had burned most of Atlanta.
  • 13th Amendment

    The 13th amendment was ratified at the end of 1865. Slavery had been abolished.
  • The Surrender at Appomattox

    On April 9th, in Appomattox, Virginia Lee and Grant met to arrange a private surrender. All remaining confederate resistance collapsed
  • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    Killed in a theater by John Wilkes Booth. Booth was a southern sympathizer.
