Civil War Virtual Timeline

  • South Carolina votes to secede from the United States

    At this point in time, this is the real beginning of the civil war, or at least the root of where it started. South Carolina was angered by Lincoln being president and changing his view on what he wanted. They then decided to secede and form their own union.
  • Lincoln's First Inaugural Adress

    Here Lincoln made claims to not interfere with slavery in places where it then existed. Here he also made an attempt to reconcile with the South.
  • Confederate forces fire on Fort Sumter

    The confederates demanded that the fort should be surrendered. The SC militia ended up taking the land from them and take control of the area, starting the civil war.
  • Lincoln Suspends the Habeas Corpus

    Here Lincoln decided to suspend the Corpus due to the fact of rebels invading and him wanting to empower the military to fight back if needed.
  • Richmond becomes the Capital of the Confederacy

    Here they decided that Richmond would be the best to be the capital due to the fact of its Strategic importance, especially due to the fact that they had so much industrial power there.
  • First Battle of Bull Run is Fought

    Here was the war that showed this was going to be a long war and that was due to the North thought it was going to be easy, but the South putting up a fight. The North's plan was to split the South in two and then capture Richmond to win the battle. The South ended up winning the battle and lit a spark for the South.
  • Jefferson Davis Elected President of the Confederacy

    The Confederacy decided that Jefferson would be the best choice of person to run their new union. Here he made the choice of making Robert E. Lee the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia.
  • Robert E. Lee is Named Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia

    Here was a time when the Confederacy thought Robert E. Lee would best fit the role of Commander of the Army, for his war accomplishments. This was when he turned down the union commander job for the confederacy.
  • The Merrimac and the Monitor Fight on the Virginia Coast

    Was technically considered a draw in the fight between the two ships, but was considered a win strategically for the Union.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    This battle is considered one of the bloodiest American battles in US history, and during this two-day battle, the Union came out on top.
  • Battle of Antietam

    This was Lee's first attempt to attack the North and gain territory, This was the bloodiest day in American history, and McClellan was tipped off about the attack.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    This battle was one of the earlier battles of the Civil war and an attack made by Robert E. Lee in an attempt to gain territory. This attempt ended up working for the confederacy for they had won this battle.
  • Emancipation Proclamation is Announced

    The proclamation basically announced all slaves under the US will be free and be able to leave their owners.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    During this battle, The confederacy won the upset, since they were at a massive disadvantage in people but in the end, came out with the win.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    This battle was the turning point of the war for the Confederacy it was them facing their end. This was due to them losing one-third of their army while the union only one-fourth. The Confederacy was unable to rebuild their army after.
  • Confederates Surrender at Vicksburg

    This was the Union attempt at securing the Mississippi border as there own, and they attacked for months until the Confederacy finally surrendered on July 3.
  • NYC Draft Riots

    The government for the Union thought they should declare a draft for the people of NYC and this caused mass chaos there since no one wanted to be forced to fight in war.
  • Lincoln Gives his Gettysburg Address

    This address was either thought really high of or the complete opposite, a disaster. His speech to speak on behalf of the already fallen was only 2 minutes long.
  • Atlanta is Captured

    This was a big win for the Union since they had taken one of the South's biggest manufacturers and thus not allowed the South to produce many goods.
  • Abraham Lincoln Defeats George McClellan to Win Re-Election

    Lincoln here won by a huge margin with a new moto and that was to eliminate slavery as a whole. This was done by adding the 13th amendment to the Constitution.
  • Sherman begins his march to sea

    On Sherman's march to the sea, he plans to break the souths ability to continue in the war. He does this by destroying three-fourths of the territory on his way to Savannah where he captures that territory.
  • Congress passes the 13th Amendment

    This was the time when slavery truly started to come to an end in the United States. This ended up ending Slavery for all of the time since then all the way until now.
  • Freedmen's Bureau is Created

    This was a passage passed by Congress in which they would allow freedmen, which were previously slaves, would be provided food, shelter, and other necessities.
  • Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address

    The main point of Lincoln's second address was to tell people they need to rebuild after the Civil War and also talk about the freedom of slavery.
  • Richmond Falls to the Union Army

    At this point, this was the final blow to the Confederacy and it was known that there will be no chance for them to make a comeback Lee also made the same claim.
  • Robert E. Lee Surrenders at Appomattox

    Lee here realized that the cause and survival of the Confederacy were hopeless. He then asked to meet with Grant to surrender under their terms where they met at Appomattox.
  • President Lincoln's Assassination

    Lincoln was in a theatre where he was murdered by John Wilkes Boothe. He was shot at point-blank with a pistol where Boothe then fled the scene.
  • John Wilkes Booth is Killed

    Due to the murder of Lincoln, a massive manhunt rose to find him where Booth was then found in a Barn.
