Civil War to Reconstruction

  • Introduction

    This time period was big for the United States as a lot was happening. The Civil War was happening as well as many new laws were getting put in place. New presidents were getting elected and a lot of conflict arose between citizens. Many had differing views on things which led to more conflict.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850
    A senator by the name of Henry Clay introduced a series of resolutions which were in part to help and solve the conflict between the north and south. A major part of this was the creation of The Fugitive Slave Act and the abolishment of Slave Trade in Washington D.C.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This act allowed the people living in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska whether or not they would allow slavery. This act repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which was to prohibit slavery north of latitude 36°30´.
  • The Election of 1860

    The Election of 1860
    The Election of 1860 was the nineteenth quadrennial presidential election which was to determine the president and vice president of the United States of America. The results ended with Republican Abraham Lincoln defeating Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, and Constitutional Union candidate John Bell.
  • South Secedes

    Following the election of President Abraham Lincoln, the state of South Carolina seceded from the United States. This was the first state to secede ever in history. About four months later Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana seceded. Later on Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee joined the other states.
  • The Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation
    President Abraham Lincoln issued The Emancipation Proclamation which said that if southern states did not end their rebellion by January 1st, 1863, then a Proclamation would go into effect.
  • The Election of 1864

    This election took place on November 8, 1864. Once again Republican Pres. Abraham Lincoln defeated Democrat George B. McClellan. This election happened during the American Civil War so this election was only contested by states that did not secede.
  • Assassination of President Abraham Lincoln

    Assassination of  President Abraham Lincoln
    On April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth who was a famous actor and confederate sympathizer. This awful event took place at the Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C.
  • Impeachment of President Andrew Johnson

    Impeachment of President Andrew Johnson
    The house of representatives voted to impeach President Andrew Jackson. They voted 11 articles of impeachment, nine of cited the presidents removal of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, a violation of the Tenure of Office Act. This was the first time a president had ever been impeached.
