The south left the Union when Abraham Lincoln won the election because they feared he'd mess with slavery, and they didn't want that. Although none of that was in Abraham's plans they still didn't trust him. This was significant because it is what led to all the chaos which led to the attack on Fort Sumter mess. -
The leaders of the Confederate States of America attack Fort Sumter. Since they thought Abraham Lincoln was invading their area when sending the supplies to this fort which was located in SC. This was significant because this attack on Fort Sumter was what started the Civil War. -
The reason for why this war happened was because the Union wanted to capture the South's capitol in order to be able to control it. The confederates come out as the victorious ones in this war. Which just puts a whole bunch of pressure on the Union soldiers because they know they must put more effort into the war, and take it more seriously from now on since they don't want to loose anymore. -
This day "Union forces (McClellan) clash with Confederate forces (Lee)", and both sides fought all day. This war was significant because It was the single bloodiest day in all of American history, and it was the first major win for the North. Another reason is because after Antietam, Lincoln saw it as a perfect opportunity to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. -
At the battle of Fredericksburg the Confederates took the victory. This was a very devastating loss for the Union, but also keep in mind that the Confederates had many advantages in this battle they had the high ground, were able to dig trenches so they'd be protected, and be bale to fire down on the Union. Something significant about this battle was that after this the Union was seen as weak. -
What happened with the Emancipation Proclamation was that it demanded all slaves to be free in the CONFEDERATE states. This was important because it helped some of the division there was in between African Americans and white people you could say. Also it made the north very happy since they no longer had to be part of slavery, or like contribute to it in any way. -
This battle was fought because the Union wanted to be in control of the Mississippi river. Both sides fought, but after a month the confederates surrendered, so the Union won. This was significant because the Union now had gotten the complete control over the Mississippi river, and the Anaconda plan was fulfilled! -
The battle of Gettysburg was kinda weird. It was unplanned. This battle lasted 3 days! The Union had the advantage of the high ground & they came out as the victorious ones. The significance of this battle is major because it was the last time the confederates would invade the north since they had lost way too many soldiers during this battle about 1/3 rd of their army was killed! -
The 54th Massachusetts Fight at Fort Wagner was the most famous African American regiment. This allowed African American men to join the armed service of the Untied States. (Although they were usually given the worst jobs & paid less) This event / war is important because it helped prove to the U.S how these people of colored were very much powerful and capable of doing the jobs white people did in the armed service of the U.S. -
The Gettysburg address was Lincoln's famous speech. Lincoln went to Gettysburg to speak at dedication of a cemetery for 3,500 soldiers that were going to be buried there. His speech was very short, yet one of the most famous ones! It was 272 words long, & less than 2 minutes. The significance of Abraham Lincoln's speech here was to bring all the people together, and unite them. Probably to also convince the confederates of coming back into the Union I'd say. -
Lincoln is elected with no support or votes of the south. This is significant because after this South Carolina is angered with the thought that Lincoln may end slavery, and so SC succeeds' from the Union. (State's rights) -
During Sherman's march to the sea him and his army caused a lot of destruction which I'd call total war to what they did. They destructed a lot of railroads by burning them under fires and then putting them around trees. This was know as Sherman Bowties. This was significant because it shows how much anger the Union had, and how they really weren't playing around. -
The 13th amendment was finally passed! (After Lincoln's death) This was such a hug victory because it meant that slavery was abolished, involuntary servitude was prohibited, & it nullified the fugitive slave act and the 3/5 compromise! The significance of this event is something very big. I say it's considered as one of the most important events in our history. -
At the Appomattox Courthouse General Lee and General grant met. It is there where Lee officially surrendered. General Grant offered some generous terms of surrender to Lee in hopes of the fighting to stop and return back home in peace. The significance of this event was that the south finally surrendered, both sides ended on "good terms" you could say, & there were some positive effects after the Civil War like the growth of industry!
