  • Slavery

    this event had been occuring for many years causing disagreements between the south and north for over 100 years
  • Missouri Compromise

    A decision made by anti-slave and slave supporting states, moderated by Henry Clay. This regulated slavery in the Western lands aside from louisianna purchase territory north of the 36'30 line except in the missouri borders, but later caused problems.
  • Nat Turner's rebellion

    turner and nearly 70 cohorts attacked and killed around 60 white people, 55 slaves, including turner were tried and executed for this event.
  • Fugative slave act

    This law penalized officers who did not return fugitive slaves escaping from their masters. This was seen as a violation of states rights
  • Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin

    Stowe's, origionally news paper article turned book a year later, cause so much conrtoversy. The book was mostly banned in the south in fear of slaves getting to it and trying to read it. The south didnt want anyone reading that because it makes them look bad.
  • John brown

    John Brown raided Harper's Ferry because he had heard that border ruffians were going to start attacking anti-slavery supporters. Brown and his sons captured citizens and raided the federal armoty hoping others who didnt support slavery and slaves themselves would join and support him, but no one showed up and BRown and his "army" were outnumbered.
  • Lincoln's Election

    Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 election, some would say the civil war started because of lincoln being elected. The south new if he was elected, slavery would be abolished so the sputh threatened secession.
