    •North was concerned by the unbalance that it would cause.
    •Missouri wanted to join the Union with slavery.
  • Compromise of 1850

    •5 separate bills passed in September 1850
    •Texas surrendered it's claim to New Mexico.
    •1849- California requested to join the union as a free state.

    •From 1850 Clay proposed many solutions to problems.
    •Calhoun was very frank with his address to Clay
    •Calhoun supported seceding.
  • The Underground Railroad

    The Underground Railroad
    •Began in the early 1800's
    •Most active from 1850-1860
    •It freed about 1,000 slaves per year
    •Over the entire course more than 100,000 slaves were freed using the system.
    •It was a network of safe houses, people that were helping the sales escape from the south to the north to canada.
    •Slaves were guided from one station to another, where they stopped to rest and eat before heading to the next, all the way up the country evading officials and slaveholders who were searching for them.

    •Anti-slavery novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe
    •Published in 1852
    •Helped lay the groundwork for the civil war according to Will Kaufman
    •Stowe a Connecticut born teacher at Hartford female seminary
    •Best selling novel following the bible.
    •Fueled the abolitionist cause in the 1850's
    •300,000 copies sold in the US and one million in Britain.
    * The south got mad because they said the north was lieing and saying it was all false
  • Birth of rebuplican party

    •In 1856 anti slavery advocates formed a new political group-the rebuplican party
    •It was formed to oppose the expansion of slavery.
    •Platform is based on American Conservatism.
    •Had almost no presence in the south.
    •It guides the union to victory and abolished slavery.
    •First meeting was in Ripon, Wisconsin on March 20th, 1854. There were roughly 30 men present.
    •Got it's name from a news paper article. Officially named Republicans in July 1854.

    •Lincoln was Republican for Illinois.
    •Douglas was Democratic
    •Trying to win control of the Illinois legislature
    •Main theme of debates was slavery
  • John Browns raid on Harper

    John Browns raid on Harper
    •October 16, 1859- brown and his followers overran the arsenal of harpers ferry.
    •October 17- a group of US troops arrived led by Col. Robert lee and James brown
    •October 19- soldiers overran brown and his followers. Ten of his men were killed, including two of his sons. Brown was wounded and tried by the state of Virginia for treason and murder. Found guilty on November 2nd.
    •December 2, 1859- age of 59, executed.
