    -Henry Clay comes and saves the day by settling this debate
    -The Missouri Compromise was a bunch of laws that helped determine which states would become slaves states and which states would be free states
    -The Missouri Compromise was on 36 30
  • The Nullification Crisis

    The Nullification Crisis
    -South states like South Carolina thought that tarrifs only benifited the North
    -At this time Vice President John C. Calhoun said that states could nullify any law they thought was unconstintional
    -The Federal Governement decided to deny South Carolinas argument
    -After the Federal Governement denied South Carolinas agrument South Carolina threatened to leave
    -To solve this issue Henry Clay made a compromise and lowered the tarrifs
  • The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

    The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
    -The Congress passed the Fugitive Slave act in 1850
    -This act allowed people in the North to capture slaves that escaped in the South
    -With this act it increased the tensioins that the North and the South had
    -This act also helped develop John Brown's Raid and the American Civil War

    -The Congress couldnt agree on making the new territories from Mexico free or slave
    -Henry Clay helped compromise again
    -The Congress agreed on making California a free state
    -However the Congress did not ban slavery for the rest of the terriories

    -Many proslavery people came to Kansas and voted Kansas to be a slave state however this was illegal
    -People who opposed slavery started their own government
    -Soon the people who opposed slavery got attacked by the people that believed in slavery
    -John Brown murderded many of his neighbors that were proslavery

    Dred Scott Decision
    -Dred Scott was a slave and he lived in Illinois which was a free state, Wisconsin which was a free territory and Missouri which was a slave state
    -No black including free slaves could become ciizens of the United States
    -Also the court decided that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional
    -Slavery was allowed in all territories of the country

    Attack on Harpers Ferry
    -John Brown wanted to give slaves the idea that they could escape
    -He planned on arming the slaves
    -John Brown and his men soon got captured
    -Many abolitionsits admired what Brown did
    -Also the tension of slavery increased
