    Lincoln was sworn in as the 16th president of the United States, Lincoln didnt have any plans to end slavery. However, Lincoln did not believe he would let the states settle for succession. He planned to settle the crisis without warfare.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    First Battle of Bull Run
    The Northern Army encountered a slightly smaller Southern force.Union soldiers drove the Rebels back. Not long after the Confederates back up soldiers arrived. The southerners charged and broke past the Northern line.
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    Attack on Fort Sumter
    Anderson offered to surrender but his offer was denied. The Civil War began with shots fired on the fort. Fort Sumter eventually surrendered to South Carolina.

    Batlle of Antietam
    Lee led his troops across the Potomac River. On September 17th the two armies fought the bloodiest single day battle in all of American history. Lincoln's army left victoriously.

    A week after the victory at Antietam Lincoln announced his intention to issue and emmancipation proclamation to grant freedom to all the slaves. Initially this was more of a symbol then a reality. Also, at first it did not liberate every slave.

    Lee decided that only bold action could save the Southern cause, With this in minb he decided that we was going to invade into southern Pennsylvania and attack Harrisburg and Philadelphia. This battle raged for three days. The Union left with a victory.

    Lincoln went to Gettysburg to go to the military ceremony for those killed in the recent Gettysburg battle. In his short speech he talked about the nation's founding and the Declaration of Independence. Lincoln gave new meaning to the principles of the Declaration of Independence.
  • Lincoln's Assasination

    Lincoln's Assasination
    Lincoln was happy that the long war was over. Lincoln and his wife took a carriage ride to Ford Theatre in Washington D.C to see a comedy. Not long into the play, John Wilkes Booth slipped into the president's box seats and shot Lincoln in the head. Lincoln was carried to a nearby house and died the next morning.

    The Surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse
    Lee wanted to make one last attempt to escape the Union and reach Lynchburg. The arrival of the union stopped Lee in his tracks and he surrendered to Grant. Grant's terms were generous and all soldiers could return home unharmed.
